Summer In Tallinn
Wow, has summer finally graced us with her warm flowing locks of sunshine. Summer is perhaps the most anticipated season here in Estonia. Well, some might say it’s spring and others still would vote for ‘Christmas’, only to find out it’s not really a season. At any rate, summer is upon us and that’s a good thing as far as we are concerned. Endless hours of golden rays, cold beverages enjoyed on the patios, grilling meat over an open fire, festivals, parties and the general abandonment of layers of restrictive clothing. These things are what summer is all about in Tallinn.
This is also the time of year when the city comes alive with more concerts and festivals than at any other time of year. In addition to the ever popular Beer Summer Festival, loads of folk gatherings and a plethora of handicraft markets, we’re also expecting visits from various international recording artists such as Moby and perhaps you’ve heard of her - Madonna? To see our complete list of must-attends this season, make sure you check out the culture section on page 10.
2009 also marks the 140th anniversary of the very first Estonian Song Festival and incidentally there will be a huge Song and Dance Celebration held this summer in the city as well. We’ve got an in-depth but concise mini-feature on the subject, which you can find on page 11. We suggest that if you are to attend only one event this summer, it should be the Song and Dance Celebration, sorry Madonna.
As always, Tallinn In Your Pocket has the most up-to-date coverage of where to stay, what to see, where to eat and how to spend your summer nights out of any publication in the city. So grab this guide, put a large capacity memory card in your camera, have a friend put some sunscreen on those hard-to-reach places and get to know this historic and beautiful city.
If we’ve somehow missed the mark or left something out that you believe deserves attention, feel free to let us know. Both praise or damnation can be sent to us by way of e-mail at: nsi @ inyourpocket.com. It’s readers like you who help to make us the best guide in the city for over eleven years running.
